In addition to all the waltzes and marches he wrote, Johann Strauss, Jr. composed 16 operettas -- a very popular form of entertainment in his day. His most famous tune is the Radetzky-March which became a musical symbol of the power of the Habsburg monarchy. His waltzes were gradually developed from a rustic peasant dance into one which posterity would recognize as the Viennese waltz. Later he conducted the orchestra of Josef Lanner and in 1826 performed at the gardens of the “Zwei Tauben” the Täuberl-walzer, the first of many sets of Viennese waltzes named for the places where they were first played.
